Really?

Are You Still Not Sure Why Your Kids Are Acting That Way?

Being a parent nowadays is hard enough as it is and I know that you and your kids not seeing eye to eye adds more to your already overly stressed out daily grind.

But if you are one and you still couldn’t figure out what the hell happened? And you are still at a lost at what brought about that huge "generation gap" between you and your child...

or if you do not know what’s this great divide between you and your parents and worst your children and their grandparents or great grandparents,...

then I will try to give a simple answer.

Listen to Bing Crosby (1950s)

Generation Gap

In the 1950s:

  • The in thing was the “Hula Hoop” (yeah for real), “Mr. Potato Head”, “Barbie Dolls”, dance halls and band stands.
  • Kids watch “Lassie”, “Tom and Jerry”, “Walt Disney” and “Mickey Mouse”.
  • People watch television shows such “I Love Lucy”, “Rin TinTin”, “Lassie” and “Leave It To Beaver”.
  • People would go to the movie houses and watch films such as “Singing In The Rain”.
  • People listen to Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra.
  • Parents were preventing their kids to emulate the likes of Elvis Presley or Jerry Lee Lewis.
  • Fast food chains such as McDonalds, Pizza Hut and drive-thru windows were just starting out.

And yes, a gallon of gasoline costs less than 20 cents.

Watch and Listen To Typical 1980s Music

In the 1980s:

  • The in thing was “Rubik’s cube”, Microsoft’s MSDOS Operating System, “Pac Man” and “Space Invaders”.
  • Kids watch “Sesame Street”, “Scooby-Doo” and “WWF Wrestling”.
  • People watch television shows such “The Cosby Show”, “Growing Pains”, MacGyver” and “Dallas”.
  • People would go to the movie houses and watch films such as “E.T.”, “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”.
  • People listen to ABBA, U2, Madonna, Culture Club and Duran Duran.
  • Parents were preventing their kids to emulate the likes of Michael Jackson, at least when people can still tell that he was Michael Jackson.
  • And by this time, prayer has been taken out of the Public School System for the last 20 years.
  • Microwave ovens and microwave cooking first came about, so no more waiting and no more whining. Food- to-go and drive-thrus were very much in common, hamburger, hotdog, pizza chains name it they have it. And people also go out for Chinese, Indian and other exotic foods.

Back To The Present

From 2001 to 2010:

  • The in thing is the “iPod”, the “Wii”, the “PSP” and the “iPad”.
  • Kids watch “iCarly”, “Degrassi:Next Generation”, “The Last Air Bender” and many other Anime shows.
  • But they also watch much more wrestling matches, the MMA, “South Park”, reality shows and a whole lot more with the hundreds of different channels on cable or satellite TV, 24/7..
  • People watch television shows such “Punkd”, “Desperate Housewives”, “24” and “Nip/Tuck”.
  • People would go to the movie houses and watch films such as the Harry Potter Series, “Broke Back Mountain”, “The Grudge” and “The Saw”.
  • People listen to Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Linkin Park.
  • Parents were preventing their kids to emulate the likes of Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears.
  • Prayer, the Bible and Christians are almost totally offensive to most people.
  • Aside from what people eat in the 1980s only in much bigger quantities, today you can add genetically modified food into the staple diet.

Listen to George's Gershwin (1920s)

a tv set in the 1920s
a tv set in the 1920s
"The Kid" (Charlie Chaplin)
"The Kid" (Charlie Chaplin)

But then if you go back to the 1920s:

  • The in things were board games, “Raggedy Ann”, “Crayola” and the good old fashioned radio.
  • People did not watch television in the 1920s, they did not have anything to watch, not until the 1930s when regular television broadcasting came about. And for some time there was only one channel.
  • People would go to the movie houses and watch silent (no-talkies) black and white movies such as that of Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino.
  • People listen to George Gershwin, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.
  • Parents were preventing their kids to emulate the likes of (I can’t really say who, I’m not that old).
  • Blue Laws were in effect, where people were prohibited by law to do many activities during Sunday. And yes, most people obey the law.
  • Food preparation and meals are still home-made, mostly thoroughly prepared and cooked meats, potatoes, fruits and veges. Processed foods have started to go main-stream. Soda drinking went on the upswing as a result of the Prohibition but of course it is much much worse now.

Anyway, we can go on and on on how it was back then and how it is now, but I guess you can see the point. And now hopefully, you can figure out why there is such a huge divide.

Touche' 4x4!!! I was just talking to a friend the other day about the young people of this generation. Respect has gone out the window for the most part and it is very sad. I was raised with manners, morals and standards. This is now considered 'old school', when in fact it should be enforced and re-enforced, it makes for better people, which makes people get along better. Great hub! Thank you so much for sharing!!

4X4, an interesting article on the not so subtle differences of generations. I had occasion to visit Tennessee back in the early '90s, I had escorted my father in his late years on his first airline flight to arrive in time for the style of the south, "dead today, viewed tomorrow, then buried by noon the 3rd day" a rapid dispatching compared to the west, where we seem to wait until folks could be assembled from across the continent to perform the ritual. There is a rift in an of it's self. I discovered "blue laws" of Sundays where all businesses were closed and the only ones open were gas stations and though they sold beer, not on Sunday. Wednesday businesses closed at noon, in respect to mid week church services. The county I was in was a beer and wine only, yet 10 miles away was another county that hard alcohol was sold, but not on Sunday. Beer was sold there as well, after 12 noon on Sunday. The beer could not be sold by a liquor store, you had to go to a beer store and no liquor in a beer store. It was a walk back in time compared to the west and 24 hour stores, at sundown the town closed it's doors and if you needed something it would be the next day, and on Sundays it would be noon to buy anything. We smoked where ever we wanted. I went to a small grocery and as you entered you walked through an aisle with a coffee pot and could grab a cup on the house to sip on while you smoked and shopped in the store, then at the end your groceries were bagged in paper, the only choice and regardless of amount were taken to your vehicle by the bagger, in turn your gas was pumped at the local Texaco station it still had full service with repair bays as well. For me it was a 20 year walk backward in town, no fast food joints existed either. Much to think on, thanks for the reminder that business has lost all it's friendly appeal over the years, and our kids will soon never even be able to recall what it was like to garner a hint of the days when business cared for it's customers in service provided. A great topic you have picked, 50

Hi 50 Caliber, that is all so true!

I was born and spent a huge amount of time in the Far East (Asia) where there are certain places where it was like 20-30 years behind compared to the West.

So imagine me coming to live in the West about a decade ago and visiting Asia every (few) years... yes, like something from the "Back to the Future" movie.

Thanks for sharing!

Great hub! Each generation should be judged on its own merits and not be compared with the previous generation. Time and society progresses and nothing remains static. There is good and bad in each generation. Everyone was young once and those are the most critical of the next generation were most likely hellraisers in their youth.
